"Fakes, Forgeries, and Fictions examines the possible motivations behind the production of apocryphal Christian texts. Did the authors of Christian apocrypha intend to deceive others about the true origins of their writings? Did they do so in a way that is distinctly different from New Testament scriptural writings? What would phrases like "intended to deceive" or "true origins" even mean in various historical and cultural contexts? The papers in this volume, presented in September 2015 at York University in Toronto, discuss texts from as early as second-century papyrus fragments to modern apocrypha such as tales of Jesus in India in the nineteenth-century Life of Saint Issa. The highlights of the collection include a keynote address by Bart Ehrman ("Apocryphal Forgeries: The Logic of Literary Deceit") and a panel discussion on the Gospel of Jesus' Wife, reflecting on what reactions to this particular text--primarily on biblioblogs--can tell us about the creation, transmission, and reception of apocryphal Christian literature. The eye-opening papers presented at the panel caution and enlighten readers about the ethics of studying unprovenanced texts, the challenges facing female scholars both in the academy and online, and the shifting dynamics between online and traditional print scholarship."--

Jahrhundert.

Ephesians is a "mystery" text that seeks to make known the multifarious Wisdom of G*d. At its heart is the question of power. In this commentary, Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza examines the political understandings of ekklesia and household in Ephesians as well as the roles that such understandings have played in the formation of early Christian communities and that still shape such communities today. By paying close attention to the function of androcentric biblical language within Ephesians, Schüssler Fiorenza engages in a critical feminist emancipatory approach to biblical interpretation that calls for conscientization and change, that is, for the sake of wo/men's salvation or wellbeing.

Geburtstag gewidmet. The Imperium Romanum was marked by a diverse and differentiated history of reciprocal interaction with the church and theology. The study examines this ever-changing relationship, encompassing a broad time span from the first to the sixth century. The essays include both the Eastern and Western parts of the Imperium and its successor states, and explore the theme by drawing from a wide range of literary genres.

A more nuanced view of the Fourth Gospel's media nature suggests a new and promising paradigm for assessing expansive and embedded uses of scripture in this work. The majority of studies exploring the Fourth Evangelist's use of scripture to date have approached the Fourth Gospel as the product of a highly gifted writer, who carefully interweaves various elements and figures from scripture into the canvas of his completed document. The present study attempts to calibrate a literary approach to the Fourth Gospel's use of scripture with an appreciation for oral poetic influences, whereby an orally-situated composer's use of traditional references and compositional strategy could be of one and the same piece. Most importantly, pre-formed story-patterns - thick with referential meaning - were used in the construction of new works. The present study makes the case that the Fourth Evangelist has patterned his story of Jesus after a retelling of the story of Adam & Israel in two interrelated ways: first in the prologue, and then in the body of the Gospel as a whole.

Published in German. In this volume, Alexander Drews studies the use, semantics and ethical significance of the lexical field Ergon in John's Gospel. He discusses all the relevant instances and compares their meaning with Aristotle's famous Ergon ('task', 'function') argument and an antique corpus. The heart of the work is a detailed exegetical section evaluating the lexical field's ethical effect. Central to this is John 3, 18-21, which opens up a perspective from the 'area of light', the 'area of darkness' and an 'ambivalent action area' and so offers the reader incentives for action. The author methodically covers new territory in semantics by testing corpus linguistics, and in ethics by applying Ruben Zimmermann's methodology on 'implicit ethics'. --

This volume contains English and German articles of Michael Labahn on the Gospel of John. The 17 articles are grouped under four headings: Reports of research, Interpreting John in the context of the Old Testament and history of ancient religions, Studies in major Johannine topics, and Studies in individual texts. The volume presents the most relevant and groundbreaking articles of Labahn which cover a wide range of approaches and address many subjects. The articles illustrate Labahn's approach for integrating methods and meanings, a typical feature of most of his work. Furthermore, it is one of his intentions to read the Gospel of John as an integral part of nascent Christianity, hence developing its own peculiar interpretation of Jesus as the son of God and giver of life. Labahn's often inspiring essays yield valuable new insights and have been well received in the scholarly community. This collection brings together into one volume articles that had been published in various places but have a thematic and theological coherence.

In this book, Sunny Kuan-Hui Wang explores the relationship between sense perception and testimony in the Gospel of John. While Johannine scholars tend to focus on one or the other, she shows that sense perception and testimony are both significant and are used together with the intention of drawing readers into the narrative so that they become witnesses in an emotionally engaged way. It is argued that John's use of sense perception together with testimony is rooted in Jewish literature. Yet John also employs a Graeco-Roman rhetorical technique, enargeia , which appeals to the persuasive power of sense perception to make his narrative vivid. John does not downplay sense perception. Rather, he uses it in the context of testimony as a means of persuasion to draw the readers, in their imagination, into the experience of the first disciples and thus deeper into faith and witness.
